A negative result does not rule out infection with Borrelia burgdorferi. The screening test of B. burgdorferi has a low predictive value for a negative result when used to detect early infection and a low predictive value for a positive result when exposure history, symptoms and clinical findings are not consistent with Lyme Disease. All positive results should be supplemented by re-testing the corresponding serum samples on a standardized Western blot test in accordance with CDC/ASTPHLD recommendations.
