Preferred Specimen:

5 mL blood collected in a fluoride/oxalate (gray-top) tube

Minimum Volume:

0.5 mL

Alternate Specimen:

Plasma from fluoride/oxalate (gray-top) tube in a plastic screw-cap vial ¥ Serum (separated from cells immediately) in a plastic screw-cap vial ¥ Spun SST

Patient Preparation:

Fasting required. Blood should be drawn in the morning after an overnight fast (no caloric intake for at least eight hours), during which time the individual may consume water.

Specimen Stability Components:

  • Room Temperature: Gray-top whole blood 24 hours
  • Refrigerated: Plasma 24 hours (separated from cells)

Reject Criteria:

Anticoagulants other than fluoride/oxalate. Hemolysis
